Reliable continuous structural health monitoring as well as temperature monitoring in nuclear power plants is key in view of safety for its surrounding.
Drawback is that most materials and thus sensors cannot withstand the radiation levels and high temperatures. These levels increase whilst getting closer to the reactor. As a result measuring the critical parameters (close to) where it is required is difficult. Lately more and more radiation hard and high temperature resistant optical fibers are available. Technobis is investigating together with NRG to what point (distance and time) these fibers can be used for Structural Health Monitoring.
In parallel we investigate the radiation resistance of integrated photonic devices similar and lower radiation levels.
